Chapter Three
The Identity of Being Unchosen
Long before I consciously feared rejection, I had already learned what it felt like to question whether I had been chosen. My story began with separation. Although I eventually had a family and people who loved me, an earlier question remained somewhere within: Why wasn’t I chosen from the beginning? I did not consciously ask that question each day. It lived deeper than language. It appeared as sensitivity to distance, a desire for reassurance, and an instinct to search for signs that someone might leave. The original circumstances changed, but the identity continued interpreting the present. … The past does not always return as a memory. Sometimes it returns as an interpretation. A message goes unanswered and the past says, ‘You are being ignored.’ Someone needs space and the past says, ‘They are leaving.’ The current event may be small, but the emotional reaction can feel enormous because I am responding not only to now, but to every older experience the moment resembles. My body could react before I had evidence. Then my mind searched for an explanation that matched the feeling. I thought I was discovering the truth. Often, I was repeating an old assumption.
You may recognize this as turning Choice Into a Verdict, giving to Earn Security, or abandoning Myself While Waiting.
